What good are all the bananas in the world if you’ve got nobody to share them with?
About half a year ago, I met the love of my life: Marvin.
We have lots of things in common, included what we eat for dinner: a plantbased cruelty-free meal. As a vegan, animal rights and the benefits veganism has on the planet are very important to me. When I went vegan, I knew pretty soon that I wanted to share life with a person that had the same moral beliefs that I did. Someone I did not have to watch eating meat in front of me or joke about my efforts to save the planet. Someone to share my smoothies with. Even though it may feel like it’s impossible for you to run into a nice vegan partner, I promise it’s not. After I decided that a vegan boo was the thing to do, it actually did not take me too long to set my first date!
Here are 5 ways to find a vegan partner:
Look online for vegan meetups
If you live in or near a city, congratulations, there’s lots of things you could easily start doing today! Use the internet to find meetups, restaurants, fruit festivals, cooking classes, picnics, and other vegan activities around your town and sign up! Become an activist! Go to demonstrations for animal rights and connect with like-minded people. The best way to find a vegan and compatible partner is by making lots of vegan friends. Even if you might not meet your bae right away, they are very likely to be in someone’s friend group, so get active and get to know people. Obviously, making vegan friends along the way is a huge bonus as well. The more vegan friends you have, the more of their vegan friends you will get to hang out with and get involved with new people along the way. And who knows who you might meet 😉
long distance relationships
If you do not live near a bigger city and have no vegan activities you could attend, don’t worry! The world is full of vegans, and we can’t expect to find our soulmate living next door. If you’re a vegan, you probably are stalking all kinds of vegan youtube channels, Instagram and Tumblr accounts anyways, so give it a shot and message people! If you see someone online that you like, start a conversation! Another great way to bring more attention to yourself is by making vegan social media platforms yourself and uploading as much as you can. That way, you have a higher chance people might start to contact you. Check facebook for vegan groups, maybe even local ones. This is how I met my boyfriend, I just messaging him and got to know him 🙂 For lots of people, the long distance relationship way works out amazing (my parents actually met living thousands of miles away from each other and are still married annoyingly happy. Online relationships give more selection, more time to get to know each other and often, an exciting traveling adventure.
Date non-vegan people like you normally would
“Huh?”, you might be thinking now. “That’s the opposite of what I want.” I know, but bare with me: If you find a partner the way you would before going vegan, there’s always the chance you might “veganize” them. This works best if you find yourself a person that is already vegan-friendly or open minded: Maybe you put you being a vegan on your dating profile or you’ve told them and they are interested in the issue. Vegetarians are always a good shot too, since they already went half the way and are even more likely to go vegan over time. (And if not, they at least won’t be eating meat in front of you). The important thing here ist to not push them, no matter how much you may want to throw their hamburger in the trash and yell at them. We can’t force anybody to be vegan. But cooking them delicious dinners, veganizing their favorite meals and taking them to vegan restaurants (since you can’t eat anywhere else) will show them that vegan food is more than chewing on raw carrot sticks. Many people think that eating plantbased meals takes a huge effort and that they’ll be missing out on everything they love, which as they will find out, is not the case at all. Slowly start talking to them about the benefits of veganism, be supportive of no matter how slow they go and make sure to never make them feel bad about their choices is the way to go. Do not show them vegan documentaries right away, no matter how hard it may be. In order for them to actually make a change and not feeling like you are forcing your lifestyle on them, it has to be their idea. Let them come to you. This is actually how Tim turned bonnyrebecca from youtube into a vegan as well!
Travel to a country with lots of vegans
Go like Thailand, Hawaii, Jamaica, Lebanon, Taiwan, Israel, and India. Go to festivals, restaurants and meet lots of amazing people along the way. Go to a farmers market, sleep in a hostel and look for vegan meetups just like you would at home.
Remember to have fun
But the most important thing to know while looking for a partner, vegan or not, is to not obsess about it. Keep yourself at first priority, do your own thing and someone awesome will tag along. All those things listed above should be done mainly to have fun and enjoy yourself. At the end of the day, this is your journey of growing and working on yourself constantly and looking for a potential partner in every vegan you meet is like looking for a potential partner in every meat eater you met: it’s not going to work. Make friends and enjoy life and it will give you what you’re looking for.
